County residents to receive drug discount cards - Las Vegas Review-Journal
January 17th, 2013
Clark County residents soon will receive a county-sponsored prescription drug discount card that can cut the cost of some medication by as much as 70 percent. It also will cover the cost of hearing and vision checkups, LASIK eye procedures and even medicine for pets.
Clark County Prescription Discount Cards will arrive in all mailboxes in a few days, and residents may obtain cards online atwww.NevadaRx DiscountCard.com, at local pharmacies and through community organizations. The website lists participating doctors and pharmacies that accept the card.
The discount cards cannot be used with any medical insurance, so the card mainly benefits residents without insurance, county officials said Monday.
People with health insurance coverage can use the card exclusive of coverage or to minimize the cost of medications not covered by insurance. The program aims to lower the cost of brand-name medications by as much as 20 percent, and most generic medications by as much as 70 percent.
The county last year entered an agreement with ProAct, a New York-based pharmacy benefit management company, to provide the discounts at no cost to the county or to individuals who use the card. Discounts are made possible through ProAct's negotiated rates with program participants. The program includes dental care that requires an enrollment fee.
The prescription cards will be accepted at more than 55,000 pharmacies nationwide, including 290 in Clark County. They include CVS, Walgreens and Wal-Mart. A complete list of pharmacies, with other information about the program, is available on the website or by calling 855-702-7283.
Information about pet prescriptions, hearing, vision, LASIK and dental benefits is available on the website, but those without Internet access may call 866-956-5400 regarding the hearing benefit and 877-201-3852 for information regarding the LASIK benefit.
