Drug discounts coming to Tazewell

July 31st, 2013

PEKIN - Tazewell County residents are likely to find a free and potentially useful surprise in their mail this week.

The Tazewell County Prescription Discount Card can save its bearers up to 50 percent on drugs.

Every household in the county is to receive a card, which can be used immediately. But eligibility is restricted to the uninsured or those with incomplete prescription insurance.

"It will allow those falling between the cracks to receive their medication," said Karin Eckdahl, an account executive with ProAct Inc., the county's New York-based partner in this endeavor.

Eckdahl spoke Wednesday night in the Tazewell County Justice Center during a news conference that unveiled the program. The presentation was held before the Tazewell County Board regular meeting.

Participating pharmacies, in Tazewell County and outside it, are to offer discounts of about 10 to 20 percent on brand-name prescription drugs and 20 to 50 percent on generics. Pet medications also are eligible.

The card embossed with the Tazewell County seal cannot be used with other insurance programs. One card covers each family. There is no membership fee, enrollment form, age limit or income requirement.

"This program is such a good deal," County Board Chairman David Zimmerman said.

The program also offers discounted dental, vision and hearing services. Dental-program enrollment is $36.50 for an individual and $52 for a family. Enrollment in the other services is free.

To establish the discounts, ProAct negotiates group prescription guarantees with pharmacies, Zimmerman said. Public money is not involved.

St. Clair County, located near St. Louis, has been using the ProAct program for about a year, Eckdahl said. Neighboring Madison County is expected to implement the program soon.

"What we like about this ProAct program is they actually market this program to the citizens," Zimmerman said. "They're calling on pharmacies and mailing cards to people - just getting the word out. They're going above and beyond to maximize the savings."

Tazewell County already is part of a similar program, but it hasn't been marketed heavily, Zimmerman said. About 150 county residents use it.

This program has the potential to serve tens of thousands, according to Zimmerman.

"There's no reason not to do this for your citizens," he said. "We're excited about what it can bring."
