Salem County prescription discount program sees growth, savings for residents
July 26th, 2013
SALEM — Salem County officials announced that a discount prescription drug card program introduced last year has seen growth and resulted in a significant savings for many county residents.
According to county Administrator Evern Ford, the ProAct Prescription Discount Card program has been used for more than 2,000 prescriptions in Salem County since it was introduced in October, resulting in savings of more than $80,000 for residents.
“We have been receiving monthly updates from ProAct and have been very happy to see steady growth in both usage and money saved,” Ford said.
ProAct is a pharmacy benefit management company which offers a county-wide discount program, among other programs. Their county program provides free assistance for individuals not covered by insurance on prescription medications, or for those who take medications not covered under their insurance.
In addition to providing savings and access to affordable prescription medications, some key benefits of their program include: No cost to the county or any participant in the program; no enrollment required; all prescriptions, brand or generic, are covered; includes medications for pets; cards can be used at pharmacies within the county, in surrounding counties and throughout the country if residents are away from home.
“Health care costs remain the highest expense that many of our residents struggle with,” said Freeholder Director Julie Acton. “Last year when we announced this program our goal was to provide every citizen, regardless of their age, income or economic status, the opportunity to defray some of those costs without incurring any increases to our county budget.
“I am delighted that we have been able to do what we set out to do — make prescription medications more affordable without placing an additional burden on the taxpayers in the county.”
By partnering with ProAct, Salem County is one of many counties across the country who are able to provide their residents, regardless of age or income, affordable access to a healthier lifestyle.
Every prescription receives a discount under the program, including some pet medications. When visiting the pharmacy, residents can simply show the pharmacist their discount card and receive an average of 10 to 20 percent savings off name brand medications, and 20 to 70 percent savings off generic medications.
Residents can visit the discount card website at www.NJRxDiscountCard.com to locate the nearest participating pharmacy as well as check the cost of the medications needed.
“This program was initiated with the goal to help alleviate some financial inconveniences to all residents,” said Ford. “We encourage every household to keep a discount card on-hand whether or not they are insured, in the off chance they need to purchase a prescription at full price.”
The ProAct Rx Discount Card Program is completely free for the county and residents. Discount cards have been provided to county offices including the Department of Social Services, the Health Department, County Administrator’s Office and to all participating pharmacies.
